We are constantly learning lessons from the people around us, especially from our parents. Whether our parents realize it or not, they teach us by the way they live their lives.
Like the mothers/daughters in the movie The Joy Luck Club, my mother and I learned to love and respect one another even though we had our trials and tribulations. As Suyuan said to her daughter, Jing-Mei,
You have style. No one can teach. Must be born this way. I see you.”
Mom died last week and I am really glad that we had the last year of Mom’s life to finally see each other, to laugh and to play, to forgive and to love.

Mom’s body is gone, but I know that she is still with me. Her spirit spoke to me shortly after she passed from this world to the next and I am sure she will share more about the other side when the time is right. I am looking forward to learning more from my mother. I suspect we will both continue learning because earth is, after all, a school.
